WAHPETON, N.D. (Andrew Zimmel, KBMW) LaMoure won the 2023 Wahpeton Post 20 tournament over the weekend, finishing 3-1 with wins against Wahpeton, East Grand Forks and Fergus Falls to start their American Legion season with a bang.
On Saturday, LaMoure won 5-4 against the host team, Wahpeton Post 20, thanks in large part to a three run third inning. Corbon Potts had an RBI single in the third on his way to a 2-4 day at the plate also scoring a run. Conner Johnson had a two RBI triple to extend the lead in the fourth inning. Landon Piehl pitched six innings allowing seven hits and two earned runs while striking out nine.
In their second game, LaMoure was able to get the win against East Grand Forks in extras, taking the 7-5 win in eight innings. Anthony Hanson got the start on the mound for LaMoure, pitching well striking out four. Hanson also got it done at the plate, going 1-4 with two RBIs. After seven complete the score was tied 5-5, Tate Mart was the runner placed at second base to start the extra frame. After a pop up by Johnson, Potts hit a single to score Mart to. Then, Hanson was able to drive in an RBI after the East Grand Forks third basemen committed an error, over throwing first base. That was LaMoure needed with Conner Ness coming in to close, striking out one and allowing only one hit in his inning of work.
On Sunday, LaMoure won 10-2 against Fergus Falls. Piehl and Potts came through again, each with three hits. Landon Piehl also drove in three runs. Potts picked up the win on the mound, giving up two runs in five innings. With three wins, LaMoure won the tournament as the only team clean through the first three games.
Detroit Lakes won 16-10 against LaMoure in the final game of their tournament. Tate Mart went 3-3 with two RBIs and a run. Garrett Heble went 2-2 with a triple and two RBIs. At the end of the tournament, pitching began to become a problem with Detroit Lakes scoring in every inning including eight runs in the fifth.
