VALLEY CITY, N.D. (CCHD) – The Barnes County Commission and the Valley City Commission declare June as
Alzheimer’s & Dementia Awareness Month.
The proclamations, endorsed by Barnes County Commission Chairman Bill Carlblom and Valley City Mayor Dave Carlsrud, were passed on Tuesday, June 6, 2023. With these proclamations, the Barnes County Commission and Valley City Commission aim to raise awareness and foster community support for individuals experiencing memory loss and other cognitive decline that interferes with daily life. By joining hands with residents, community stakeholders, and public servants, Barnes County and Valley City aspire to create awareness and support for individuals experiencing memory loss as well as their caregivers and family members.
This proclamation represents a steadfast commitment to supporting the well-being, growth, and progress of Valley City and Barnes County.
The Sheyenne Valley Healthy Brain Initiative team is convened by City-County Health District. The three primary goals include increasing awareness of Alzheimer’s and Dementia, providing support to caregivers who support the approximately 620 people in Barnes County who are experiencing memory loss, and creating dementia friendly communities.
“We have partnered with the Alzheimer’s Association of North Dakota to provide educational events in the community – topics have included Understanding Alzheimer’s & Dementia or the 10 Ways to Love Your Brain,” states Theresa Will, CCHD Administrator. “As these events are scheduled, the public is invited to attend for free.”
The Sheyenne Valley Memory Café will debut on Thursday, June 29 at the Legacy Place Community Room (570 13 th Street NE, Valley City) from 1 PM to 3 PM. The informational program starts at 1:30 PM. “Memory Cafes are an opportunity for individuals with dementia or early onset Alzheimer’s to gather together and connect with others. Caregivers and family members are invited to join the Memory Cafes as well. Starting in September, we will be hosting the Memory Café monthly. We want to hear from individuals in June about the topics they want to learn more about during our June Memory Café” shares Will.
