WEST FARGO, ND. (NewsDakota.com) – West Fargo and Jamestown combined for no-hitters through seven innings of play on Thursday night in one of the best baseball games ever played in North Dakota.
Jamestown advanced to the Class A semifinals with a 3-1 victory over West Fargo in extra innings.
Mason Lunzman and Caleb Anderson dazzled hitters for seven innings with neither pitcher allowing a hit. Lunzman and Anderson stranded potential go-ahead runs at third base on more than one occasion in a true pitcher’s duel.
The break for Jamestown came during the top of the eighth on a chopper from Brooks Roaldson to third base. West Fargo third basemen Seth Wiggestrand charged the ball but made a bad throw to first, allowing Roaldson to go all the way to third with no one out.
After a pop-out, Lunzman provided the first hit of the game, smacking a double into left-center field, scoring Roaldson, making it 1-0 Blue Jays. Max Fronk drove in Lunzman during the next at-bat, singling into right field. After Jackson Watlers reached on a fielders choice and stole second, the Jays capitalized on another Packer error, scoring off a strikeout on a drop third strike that was thrown into right field.
Lunzman hit his pitch limit in the eighth after striking out one and allowing two runners to reach. In relief, Walters got back-to-back would-be double play balls on the ground, but a pair of Jamestown errors made it 3-1 with one out and the bases loaded. With the bases full and the game-winning run at first, West Fargo lined into a 4-3 double play to give Jamestown the win and push the Blue Jays into the state semifinal.
Lunzman got the win on the hill, going 7.1 innings with 10 strikeouts and no hits allowed. Walters closed the door, picking up the save in the eighth and keeping the no-hitter intact. Jamestown totaled just two hits in the victory, committing four errors and leaving five runners on base. Anderson was given the loss despite an outstanding outing, striking out 11 over 7.1.
Jamestown now heads to the Class A semifinals where they will meet #4 Fargo North. First pitch is scheduled for approximately 6:30 PM Friday night at Young Field in West Fargo. Full coverage can be heard on Q101.1 FM and newsdakota.com.
