JAMESTOWN, ND. (NewsDakota.com) – A three-run sixth inning helped the Mandan baseball team defeat Jamestown, 6-3, in the WDA semifinals at Jack Brown Stadium.
Mandan led 2-0 after the opening inning and held that advantage until the third. The Blue Jays brought the game back to within one run after Adam Sortland scored on a Mason Lunzman groundout. Sortland was on base as a courtesy runner for Thomas Newman after he doubled to start the inning.
Jamestown took its first lead in the fourth inning, scoring two runs. Payton Hochhalter led off the inning with a double and scored on an error by Mandan during a Tyson Jorissen steal. Jorissen, who reached on a fielder’s choice, scored off a Carson Orr single later in the at-bat, making it 3-2 Blue Jays.
Mandan regained the lead in the sixth, scoring three runs off of four hits and two walks. The Braves added an insurance run in the seventh and shut the door in the bottom of the frame despite a comeback attempt from Jamestown.
Hochhalter led Jamestown offensively with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, scoring one time. Jackon Walters, Broosk Roaldson, and Luznman recorded one hit along with Newman and Orr. Newman was given the loss, going five and a third, allowing five runs on eight hits. The sophomore struck out six. Walters in relief struck out three and gave up one unearned run.
