VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Heartland Consulting Group held a tabletop exercise for First Responders in Valley City to walk them through a train derailment that resulted in a fire, multiple injuries, and a hazardous materials spill from rail cars.
City leaders, firefighters, police, the Barnes County sheriff, dispatchers, EMT’s, local hospital officials and the Barnes County Emergency Manager all participated in the SimCity exercise in the Valley City fire hall.
Derek Hanson with Heartland Consulting Group said the exercise focuses on training first responders to deal with a stressful situation following a train derailment, injuries, fire, and hazardous materials spill.
He said the practice centered on their upcoming Full Scale (Hands-on) Exercise which will be held Thursday, May 25th north of Valley City. The event was sponsored by Canadian Pacific Railroad. More details about the simulated outdoor exercise will be released closer to the May 25th event.
