GAME TWO: JAMESTOWN 7, MORNINGSIDE 6
Game two was up and down throughout with Morningside hitting two home runs in the windy conditions, but freshman Angie Chin provided the walk-off for a win in the regular season finale.
UJ took an early 1-0 advantage after Maddie Speath doubled home Samarah Martinez in the first inning. The Jimmies scored again in the third before Morningside hit two two-run home runs to go in front 4-2. Jamestown scored two runs in the bottom fourth in response as the Mustangs committed three errors in the inning.
Morningside grabbed the lead in the top of the seventh and was three outs away from clinching home field advantage to open up the postseason tournament. The Jimmies had different plans. Gracie Fischer and Battistoni singled with one out, and Neiles drove in Kylie Yanzuk who was courtesy running for Fischer.
With the score at 6-5 and runners on first and second, Kayla Quintanilla tied the game with a single back into center field. Sonya Rodgers was subbed in as a courtesy runner for Neiles, a substitution that may not have been made had Gentry Turin not said something.
“I wasn’t thinking about Sonya Rodgers to pinch run,” head coach Kevin Gall said. “Gentry Turin told me ‘Hey, Rodgers hasn’t been in yet’ and I was thinking she was already done.”
Rodgers had pinch run in game one but had yet to enter the second game of the doubleheader. With Rodgers now on second, Angie Chin singled into shallow left, and Rodgers slid in safely just behind the tag to secure the walk-off win.
“If we wouldn’t have subbed Rodgers in, we wouldn’t have scored that run” Gall added.
Hailey Schaefer picked up her eighth win in the circle, going 3.1 innings and striking out three. Schaefer allowed two earned runs off of five hits.
