OAKES, ND (NewsDakota.com) – The Oakes Tornadoes fell in the season opener to the Central Cass Squirrels. The final score was 6-3.
The game started with dueling pitchers. Oakes would throw out Fletcher Willprecht who would strike out the side while Central Cass started Jaxon Parker who would strike out four in the first inning. This was due to a dropped third strike.
The strike outs and weak contact would continue till Willprecht got the first hit of the game in the third inning. This wouldn’t amount to anything however as he would be stranded at 2nd after stealing the bag. Central Cass would get the actual scoring started in the top of the 4th. They wouldn’t record a hit but Brayden Mitchell would reach on a fielders choice and Carter Maasjo would reach on a walk. Logan Braaten would “bat” them in with two outs after sending a sharp hopper up the middle that would go past second baseman James Throener, who would be charged with the error.
The Squirrels would then chase Willprecht after he issued a 4 pitch walk to Mason Bosse begin the 5th. Michael Hoistad would come in relief. The Squirrels would then get the bats going with Carter Vrchota getting a single. Sam Kobbervig would ground into a fielders choice to score Bosse. Mitchell would then hit a double to drive in Vrchota. Mitchell would then be driven in by a Maasjo single. The inning would end with a 5-0 lead.
Central Cass would bring Vrchota to pitch in the 6th inning and the Tornadoes would get the bats going, capitalizing on a Xavier Vossler walk and a Gaven Christensen single. Brogan Roney would score Vossler on a single. Then Max Walock hit a ball down the third base line for a double scoring both Roney and Christiansen. He would be stranded at 3rd and the inning would end with the score being 5-3.
The only other scoring of the game was off of a wild pitch and a passed ball to score Sam Cobbervig in the top of the 7th. The Tornadoes would strand two in the 7th and the game would end 6-3.
The winning pitcher would be Jaxon Parker who went 5 IP, with 11 Ks to 1 BB, and gave up 2 hits. The losing pitcher would be Fletcher Willprecht who went 4 IP, gave up 3 runs with only 1 being earned, he would issue 4 BB’s and strike out 9. Willprecht would be given the Bank North Player of the Game.
The Tornadoes will now be in the Enderlin Tournament over the weekend.
