GRAND FORKS, ND  (NewsDakota.com)  Jamestown had stretches where they skated toe to toe with the state’s top-ranked team, but Red River took advantage of quick chances to dash by the Blue Jays.

Grand Forks Red River shut out Jametown 7-0 in the opening round of the North Dakota State Class A Hockey Tournament at Ralph Engelstad Arena Thursday.

Red River outshot the Jays 45-12 in the game, and scored just 26 seconds into the game to set a tone.

Jamestown adjusted quickly, with goaltender Andrew Walz making some big stops against quality scoring chances to keep the game a one-goal margin till late in the first period.

But Red River found success in bunches to follow.  Two goals in the last three minutes and change of the first and an early goal in the second pushed the margin to 4-0.  Again the Blue Jays found a way to block shots and deny further scoring till late in the third.  Three goals for Red River in the final four minutes produced the final margin.

Walz stopped 38 shots in the loss.

Jamestown faces Minot in the consolation semi-finals Friday at 12:00 PM, with the game broadcast on Q101, 101.1 FM.
