VALLEY CITY, ND (NewsDakota.com) An amazing career for a Hi-Liner wrestler ended with top honors twice Friday.
Koye Grebel was named North Dakota’s Mr. Wrestler after capping a 44-2 season with a technical fall (15-0) in 4:33 to win the state championship at 138 pounds.
Koye Grebel becomes the second Hi-Liner to win the award, and will leave Valley City with three state titles and records in just about every statistical category. He is second to Parker Larson for wins in a career.
With two falls, a major decision, and today’s technical fall, Koye Grebel was never seriously challenged during the two-day tournament.
Two additional Hi-Liners captured boys state titles Friday. Younger brother Koltyn won the 113-pound crown, taking a 12-6 decision over second-seeded Joey Entzminger of Bismarck Legacy. Koltyn Grebel ends his junior year with a 44-1 season record.
Broden Muske also grabbed the top spot in his weight class, winning the 220-pound state title with a 7-0 decision over Kaydn Turnbow of Minot. Muske finished the season 43-3.
Tucker Johnson, Valley City’s fourth finalist, was defeated in the 132-pound final by fall to top-seed Gabe Mortenson of Minot. Johnson finished the season with a 38-8 record.
Espen Kunze finished on the podium with an eighth-place finish at 145, capping his season 22-14.
But the Hi-Liners were not done winning titles after the boys finished up.
Mylee Christianson upset her way to a state championship at 135, knocking off top-seed Aleiya Cullinan of Bismarck Legacy 4-2 in the final. Christianson finished 28-5 on the season.
Also in the girls division, Gabby Hannig rebounded after being upset in the championship bracket for a third-place finish at 105. Hannig, who spent time in the boys varsity roster in duals, capped a terrific season with a 33-8 record.
Deegan Kirschenmann entered the tournament seeded eighth at 120, but finished seventh with a 28-16 record. Brook Bundy finished seventh at 190, running her season record to 21-15 for the Hi-Liners.
