Harvey, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)—-The Carrington wrestling team went 3-1 on the day and finished in third place at the 2023  Region 2 Dual tournament. Central Cass (CC), the top seed won the championship dual over the number 3 seed Pembina County North (PCN) Grizzlies 46-33. PCN defeated the Cardinals 36-33 in the semifinals and no challenge match for second place as the Cardinals already lost the the Grizzlies.

The Cardinals started the day off with a 50-0 win over the Northern Cass Jaguars. Only 2 of the 7 contested matches went all 3 periods and the Cards would get 2 major decision wins from Dru Carr at 113 pounds in a 11-1 victory and Kolby Zink picked up a 18-6 win at 126 pounds. Nic Garber (138), Corbin Clifton (145), Kael Kovar (152), Max Ciubotereanu (170), and Callen Garber (220) all won by pin and forfeit wins for Gabe Clifton (120) and Trace Hoggarth (132) all picked up wins in the victory.

The semifinal match came down to the wire but the Grizzlies prevailed with a 36-33 win. Both teams had 7 weight classes scoring points but the Grizzlies scored 1 more pin/forfeit victory for the 3 point difference. The Cards gave up 2 forfeit victories at 145 and 182 and PCN allowed just 1 forfeit at 220 to Callen Garber. Cardinal wins by pin came from Corbin Clifton (138), Max Ciubotereanu (170), and Trace Hoggarth (126). Other wins came from Kael Kovar (160), 3-2 decision, and Skye Kramlich (106), 10-4 decision. The final match had Nic Garber (8th grader) at 132 taking on Levi Hinkle (senior), a state finalist 2 years ago and placer last year. Hinkle led early but Garber, who wrestled extremely well tied the match late in  the second period at 8-8. Hinkle held on for a 11-8 decision, but a great effort from Garber  battling it out against one of the best 132 pounders in class B.

The Cardinals would defeat Hillsboro-CV 42-36 in the consolation bracket picking up wins by fall were Kovar (160), Carr (113), Hoggarth (132), and Corbin Clifton (138). Charlie Jorgenson (195), Callen Garber (220), and Kramlich (106) all won by forfeit.

The Cardinals ended the day with a third place finish defeating Harvey-WC (HWC) 51-18. The Cards would get 8 wins via pin or forfeit to capture the third place finish. Wins by pin came from Kovar (152), Ciubotereanu (170), Jorgenson (195), Kramlich (106), Hoggarth (132), and Corbin Clifton (145). Gabe Clifton (120), and Kolby Zink (126) both won by forfeit. The 113 pound match had Dru Carr pulling out a 3-2 victory over Cale Hase of the Hornets in the best match of the dual. The Cardinals, finishing third will not advance to the state dual tournament for the first time since 2019. The Cardinals will travel to Hillsboro next Saturday for the 2023 Region 2 individual tournament starting at 10:00 A.M..
