FOREST CITY, IA (NewsDakota.com) A thirty-point third quarter for the Viking women, and a gritty defensive effort for the Viking men, led to a Valley City State University sweep of Waldorf University in Forest City, IA Friday night.
Hailey Roberts drained four from range and Taryn Dieterle scored 11 of her 17 after halftime in a Viking 75-57 win over the Warriors. The Vikings led 31-28 at the break, then exploded for 30 points in the third quarter, largely with a rotation of non-starters in the game.
Ashlyn Diemert led the way with 18 points, with both Roberts and Dieterle netting 17. Viking defense held Waldorf to just 26.7% shooting, 20-75 from the field.
The men won a different way.
Waldorf shot 2-37 from the three-point line, 5.4% for the night, and committed 20 turnovers as the Vikings ground out a 58-49 win to stay within a game of second place in the North Star Athletic Association.
Valley City State struggled to score as well, but knocked in 20 points off of Waldorf’s giveaways. In addition to the Warrior’s three-point shooting woes, they shot 26.7% from the field overall, and 5-11 from the foul line, a disastrous stat line against a Viking team that struggled to find it’s own rhythm all night.
Reigning NSAA Player of the Week Daevonte Munson reeled in a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Cayden Rickard added key offense with 13 points. Joe Owens scored eight of his 10 after the break, consistently attacked Waldorf’s best player, Tyree’on Johnson, and scoring. Owens punctuated the night with a tomahawk slam as the shot clock ran out for his 10th point.
The Viking women move to 6-4 in NSAA play, 13-10 overall, and remain in fourth place, holding position for the final home game in the tournament’s opening round. The men improve to 6-4 in the league, a game out of second place, and 13-11 overall. Both teams travel to LaCrosse, WI to play Viterbo Saturday.
