Carrington, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)—-The Carrington girls wrestling team went 2-1 reaching the championship match before falling to top seeded Central Cass 54-27. The second seeded Cardinals knocked off the seventh seeded Fargo Stingers 42-40 in the opening round. The Cards would down South Border 51-30 in the semifinals to reach the title match.
Several key matches in the win over Fargo included Kenzie Jost (7th), started the dual at 100 pounds with a win by fall over Jamelia Ofori at 3:12 of the second period. Taya Lura (Jr.), 105 pounds, Kylie Skadberg (Jr.), 115 pounds, Khendra Garcia (Fr.), 135, Kennedy Wendel (Sr.), 140 all won by pin. Trisa Schroeder (Sr.), would pickup a huge win by fall at 145 over Webaline Naklen with just 5 seconds left in the match. Schroeder and Naklen were tied at 1-1 with just 25 seconds left in the final period when Schroeder recorded a takedown and put Naklen to her back in the process before recording the fall. The Cardinals would ultimately trail 40-36 heading into the 250 match with Ashley Lindberg (Fr.) for Carrington and Emma Osier (Sr.) of Fargo went to the second period with no score. Lindberg picked the top position and put Osier to her back and got the win by pin giving the Cardinals 6 team points and the victory 42-40.
The Cards dropped South Border (SB) 51-30 in the semifinal round picking up 5 wins by pin from Taya Lura, Kylie Skadberg, Mercedes Lura, Trisa Schroeder, and Karlee Lesmann. The Cards also received the wins by forfeit, and a 6-0 decision from Kennedy Wendel that added 3 team points.
The Cards would build a 27-18 lead after the first 8 matches of the dual. Central Cass would win the final 6 matches all by pin or forfeit and rolled to the 54-27 victory capturing the East region title. The Cards picked up wins from Taya Lura (forfeit), Journey Peltier (forfeit), Kennedy Wendel (pin), Trisa Schroeder (pin), and Khendra Garcia with a 5-1 decision before the Squirrels won the final 6 matches. The Carrington girls with travel to Grand Forks next Friday for the East region individual championships at Red River High school starting at 1:00 P.M.
