The tenth-ranked Jimmie men’s volleyball team opened the 2023 season with a sweep of Kansas Wesleyan University Friday evening at Harold Newman Arena.
THE BASICS
- Final Score: #10 UJ 3, Kansas Wesleyan 0 (25-11, 25-20, 25-16)

HOW IT HAPPENED
- An 8-1 run midway through the first set turned a 4-3 Jimmie lead into a 12-4 advantage.
- KWU got as close as 15-9 before UJ reeled off six straight points, beginning with a kill by Caylor Cox.
- Two kills by Downey Huynh and a service ace by Oguzhan Oguz helped close out the set for Jamestown.
- In set two, the Coyotes led 5-3 after an attack error by Huynh, but he redeemed himself on the next play, putting down the first of three kills in a 5-0 Jimmie run that made it 8-5.
- KWU got as close as 11-10 only to have win four of the next five points. UJ maintained a lead between four and six points for the remainder of the set before taking at 25-20 victory.
- Leading 9-7 in the third set, Jamestown took five consecutive points to open up a 14-7 lead.
- The Coyotes ended UJ’s run with back-to-back points of their own, but would get no closer the rest of the way.
JAMESTOWN GAME NOTES
- UJ hit .421 for the match, with 39 kills against seven errors on 76 attempts.
- Oguz led the offense with 13 kills and recorded a pair of aces.
- Huynh and Cox both had nine kills, with Huynh hitting a team-best .533 on 15 attempts.
- Derek Correa passed out 34 assists and had two total blocks.
- Huynh and Adam Lopata recorded six digs each. Oguz, Joshua Boze, and Ever Cancel also had two total blocks.
- The Jimmies won their 17th straight conference match.
KANSAS WESLEYAN GAME NOTES
- KWU hit .000 for the match, with 19 kills against 19 errors on 67 attempts.
- Justin Burras and Jalen Watt tied for team lead with six kills each.
- Marcus Taylor passed out 15 assists, Jeremy Lapeze had nine digs, and Watt and Viet Nguyen combined for KWU’s lone block.
