HASTINGS, Neb.– Mason Walters and Will Cordes combined for 43 points to help lead the 14th-ranked Jimmie men’s basketball team to a 71-57 win over Hastings College Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Walters (two), Colby Vazquez, and Cordes all hit three-pointers in a 12-1 run that turned a 7-5 Hastings lead into a 17-8 edge for the Jimmies.
  • After Tyrique McMurrin converted a three-point play to make it a six-point lead (28-22) with 4:33 to play, the Jimmies went on a 5-0 run and finished the half with 12 of the final 14 for a 40-24 lead at the break.
  • Seven of UJ’s 14 first-half field goals were threes, including two each from Walters and Cordes.
  • Cole Woodford‘s basket to start the second half began a 7-0 run that ballooned Jamestown’s lead to 47-24 and forcing a Hastings timeout at the 16:56 mark.
  • Hastings would get no closer than 15 points while the Jimmies eventually pushed their advantage to 27 on two different occasions.
  • A dunk by Jimmy Llinas at the 5:59 mark made it 71-44, but the Broncos held UJ scoreless for the remainder of the contest, finishing on a 13-0 run.

JAMESTOWN GAME NOTES

  • The Jimmies shot 46.4 percent (26-of-56) from the field, including 40 percent (12-of-30) from three.
  • Walters had 23 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals to lead the Jimmies.
  • Cordes finished with 20 points and made 6-of-9 three-point attempts.
  • Cooper Olson grabbed six rebounds and Cole Woodford also passed out four assists.
  • UJ is 10-1 against Hastings since joining the GPAC.

HASTINGS GAME NOTES

  • Hastings shot 45.8 percent (22-of-48) from the field, including 44.4 percent (4-of-9) from three.
  • Danilo Matovic paced the Broncos with 21 points and seven rebounds.
  • Reggie Thomas was also in double figures with 11 points.
  • The Broncos lost for the fourth time in their last five games.
