VALLEY CITY, N.D. (WWGO) – On Monday, January 23 at 7 pm a talk will be presented on “Advocating for Gun Violence Prevention”; it will be held at the Rhoades Science Center auditorium on the campus of Valley City State University in Valley City.
“Teacher Shot By Six Year Old” in Virginia. This was the startling headline as “What in the World Is Going On” was arranging this presentation on preventing gun violence.
The presenter will be Cheryl Biller a volunteer with the organization Moms Demand Action ND, which is an emerging voice for gun safety and gun violence prevention. The organization has approximately 1500 members across the state–a group of Moms, Dads, Aunts, Uncles, gun owners, republicans, democrats teachers and others who are working to pass common sense gun legislation that most Americans support and is proven to save lives.
Moms Demand Action works with community partners to prevent suicide, keep our kids and teachers safe at school, and works to normalize conversation about gun security. They are supportive of the second amendment and don’t want to take peoples guns away. Moms Demand Action does believe in common sense gun laws that can also fit into good public policy and save lives.
Biller will begin the evening by sharing disturbing statistics related to gun violence. In the U.S. more that 110 people everyday are killed by gun violence, and more than twice that many are injured or affected by gun violence every day.
“The biggest impact for us here in North Dakota related to gun violence is suicide,” states Biller. “The impact for us in ND is higher than the national average.”
Biller will close the evening by sharing how people can engage in supportive work in our communities to help create safer communities. In the next four months a significant amount of work related to legislation will be carried out by Moms Demand Action in order to prevent gun violence and save lives.
“What in the World Is Going On?” (WWGO,) the sponsor of this presentation, is a campus-community group jointly sponsored by VCSU’s Departments of Science and Social Science and members of the Valley City community. “What in the World” was begun shortly after 1/1/01 for the purpose of addressing issues of local, national and international importance.
