JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) The 2023 Stutsman County Class B Boys’ Basketball Tournament kicked off on Thursday with four games at the Jamestown Civic Center, both the one and two seeds advance to the semifinals Friday night, here are the results:
D5 #1 Ellendale 61 D6 #4 Kidder County 35
The two-time defending Stutsman champs jumped out to an early 12-0 lead three minutes into the contest and never looked back as they roll past the Wolves of Kidder County 61-35 in the first game of the day. Ellendale shot almost 60% from the field and made six treys. Four of the five starters were in double figures, Levi Reis had 13 points, Anton Geller and Mason Molan with 12 each and Riley Thorpe added 11. Starting Guard Jack Bommersbach had seven points, Thorpe and Gellar were one rebound away from a double-double, they both had nine boards. KC was led by Jace Larson with 13, including three 3-pointers. Ellendale improves to 5-0, KC drops to 0-5.
D6 #2 South Border 50 D5 #3 Carrington 39
The first quarter was close throughout, featuring six lead changes and two ties, the Mustangs led by only three points at the end of the first quarter of play, 14-11. But then South Border went on an 8-0 run to start the second quarter and led 22-11, Carrington struggled to get a bucket until about two minutes left till halftime, they made a late push and closed the gap to 22-18. SB outscored Carrington 28-21 in the second half to get the victory and improve to 4-1 overall, Carrington is now 3-2 overall. SB was led by Trevor Schmidt with 18 points, 19 rebounds and one blocked shot, Levi Buchholz added 13 points and four steals. The Cardinals were led by Hudson Schmitz with 14 points and nine rebounds, Grady Shipman added 10.
D6 #1 Medina/Pingree/Buchanan 45 D5 #4 Griggs/Midkota 39
The Titans of Griggs/Midkota gave it all they had against the number one seed from District 6, they came out strong right from the get-go and had a commanding 17-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. But the Thunder of MPB came storming back in the second quarter outscoring GM 18-6 and taking a 24-23 lead at the half. GM kept things close in the second half but MPB held on for the victory and will move into the second semifinal Friday night. Rylen Wick led the way for MPB with 14, Josh Moser added 13. GM was led by Eli Larson with 14. MPB improves to 2-0, GM is now 2-4.
D5 #2 Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier 54 D6 #3 Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter 48
The last game of the night was another fairly close contest, as the EKM Rebels beat the Imperials of NGS for the second time this year and will now move into the second semifinal with MPB Friday night. The Rebels beat the Imperials by 22 points on December 19th in Napoleon, this time around was a win by only six points. They were tied at 27 at halftime, and tied at 37 after three quarters. Leading all scorers was Jacob Nitschke with 21 points, 10 rebounds and five steals. Braeden Kinzler added 10 points. For NGS, Trenton Erbele had 15 points and eight rebounds, Trevor Moos had 11 points. EKM improves to 2-1 overall, NGS drops to 1-4 overall.
