JAMESTOWN, ND. (NewsDakota.com) – Senior Hannah DeMars took over in the third quarter Monday afternoon to help lead the University of Jamestown women’s basketball team to its sixth consecutive victory, taking down Morningside 82-70 at Harold Newman Arena.

In the first game of 2023, Jamestown jumped back into conference play by snapping a seven-game losing streak against Morningside. The Mustangs got off to a fast start, leading Jamestown by as many as 10 points in the first quarter. At the break, the Jimmies had taken a two-point lead thanks to Kia Tower’s team-high nine points in the first half.

DeMars forced her will in the third quarter, scoring 15 points to push Jamestown to a 56-53 lead heading into the fourth quarter. In the fourth, the Jimmies continued to connect at the free throw line, and sophomores Kate Busek and Jailyn Martinson each reached double figures to put away the Mustangs late.

Five players finished in double-digits for the Jimmies, led by DeMars who tallied 27 points and 11 rebounds. It’s the fifth game this season where DeMars has scored 20+ points. Busek set a new career-high with 12 points while Kate Cordes and Martinson each had 11. Audrey Rodakowski finished with 10 points, five rebounds, and four assists. UJ shot 50% from the floor and went 21-24 at the free throw line. Morningside was led in scoring by freshman Lily Vollertsen who had 17 points.

Jamestown, now 12-2 overall, improves to 7-1 in the GPAC, trailing only Dordt for the top spot in the conference. The Jimmies face #15 Northwestern on Friday night in Iowa before taking on #5 Dordt Saturday. UJ returns home on January 11th to face #22 Briar Cliff.
