OAKES, ND (NewsDakota.com) – The Oakes Tornadoes finished the year of 2022 with their first win of the season on December 30th. They took down the Hankinson Pirates by a score of 66-57 in a tight knit affair.
The Tornadoes came out firing in the first quarter only missing 4 buckets from the field going 8/12 from the field. Hankinson went 6/16 from the field in the first quarter a trend that would continue for the rest of the game. The score after the first was 18-17 in favor of Oakes.
The second quarter saw a lot more fouls with both teams combining for 17 in the half. The Pirates were able to get a lot more shots off as well as they would eventually take a lead and hold onto that lead going to the half. The Tornadoes offense however was operating at the best seen all season with quick passing plays and smart cuts allowing them to score on most possessions. The half would end with Hankinson up 32-29.
The second half saw a resurgence of the Tornadoes specifically with Adler Paeper in the third quarter and Xavier Vossler in the fourth quarter. In the third alone Paeper would pick up 10 points going 4/6 from the field and 2/4 from the charity stripe. Paeper would finish the night with 14 points. Vossler’s entire half was something to remember as defensively he picked up many steals and boards and offensively he picked up 10 points in the fourth quarter. He 5/5 in the fourth quarter always cutting to exactly where he needed to be. He would end the night with 21 points.
The Pirates were not able to fight back from the Tornado onslaught despite keeping it close and even more foul trouble would put the Tornadoes into the double bonus which end most opportunity of coming back. The final score was 66-57.
The Bank North Player of the Game was Xavier Vossler going 8-12 from the field and 5/5 from the charity stripe for a total of 21 points.
The Tornadoes next play the Griggs-Midkota Titans at home on January 3rd.
