Oakes, ND (Newsdakota.com) – The Oakes Tornadoes saw basketball action over the weekend with the boys playing two games and the girls playing one.

FRIDAY 12/9 Boys @ Sargent County 

Final: Bulldogs 51 – Tornadoes 46

The Tornadoes boys basketball team started their season with a loss on Friday December 9th. They travelled down to Millnor to take on the Sargent County Bulldogs and came up just short with a score of 51-46.

The Bulldogs played fast basketball and had an aggressive defense the Tornadoes weren’t able to completely solve.

The Tornadoes were led in scoring by Trey Skoglund who unofficially had 12 points going 4/10 from the field and 4/7 from the free throw line. Also of note was Xavier Vossler with 9 points, Noah Sundby with 7 and Andrew Wolff with 7. Wolff also had a great night defensively in the losing effort.

Girls Final: Tornadoes 40 – #9 Spoilers 36

The Tornadoes spoiled the #9 Spoilers with a 40-36 win. They started out hot in the first half leading at the end 22-13. Their offense of Emma Muggli and Ann Muggli worked outstanding and defensivley Laikyn Roney and Brynn Dethlefson lead the way to the 11 point lead with great rebounding.

The second half saw the Spoilers fight back however the Tornadoes were able to do enough to stave them off and preserve a 4 point lead.

The Tornadoes were lead in scoring by Emma Muggli with unofficially 15 points going 6/11 from the field and 3/6 from the charity stripe. Also of note was Roney who unofficially had 11 points with 9 of them coming in the second half going 4/15 from the field and 2/4 on free throws.

Boys Final: #8 Spoilers 54 – Tornadoes 31

The #8 Spoilers pulled off the split with a commanding win over the Tornadoes. They were able to use a strong second half to put themselves out of reach.

The game started exceptionally slow with almost no scoring in the 1st quarter. The half would end with a score of 19-15 with Grafton leading. The highest scorers on each team were Adler Paeper for the Tornadoes with 5 and Kyler Droog of the Spoilers with 5. The high intensity defense of both team kept the scoring low as each team was effectively putting pressure on the ball and winning defensive rebounds.

The second half saw the Spoilers play spoiler. They came out and dropped several straight buckets to expand out their lead. They were led by Braylon Baldwin who would score 9 in the half and by Juan Villarreal who had 5 in the half but had a lot of rebounds and good defensive pressure. The Spoilers would also put 4 three’s in to start the half. They would end the night with 6. The Tornadoes would only be able to muster up two.

The Tornadoes were lead in scoring by Adler Paeper with an unofficial 11 going 4/9 from the field and 2/4 from the stripe.
