VALLEY CITY, ND (NewsDakota.com) Viking football players picked up offensive and defensive Player of the Week awards for their performances in the season finale Saturday.
Sophomores Avery Thorsgard (Northwood, ND) and Riley Gerhardt (Valley City, ND) won North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards, respectively, for their performances in a 48-40 win over Mayville State University at the FargoDome Saturday.
Thorsgard returned to the starting quarterback position after sustaining an injury in week two, and was dazzling, rushing for 170 yards and two scores, then throwing for 136 yards and three scores, leading to a five touchdown day.
Gerhardt sacked Comet quarterback Tim Salmon three times to finish with 12.5 sacks for the year, leading the nation in that category.
The Vikings finished 5-5 for the season.
