FARGO, ND. (NewsDakota.com) – For the first time in program history, the Jamestown High School football team has repeated as state champions as the Blue Jays took care of Fargo North 46-28 in the 11A state title game.
Fargo North jumped on the board first to go ahead 7-0 but the Blue Jays converted a 4th and goal from Payton Hochhalter to Nate Walz for the first Jamestown touchdown of the game. After a missed extra point, Jamestown forced a three-and-out for the Spartans and partially blocked a punt to set up good field position.
The Jays would roll from there, scoring on the next four drives of the first half, all led by Hochhalter, to take a 32-21 lead into the break. Neither team scored in the third quarter but Jamestown had the momentum from there and capitalized in the fourth.
Hochhalter rushed into the endzone for the third time to start the fourth quarter to push the Jamestown lead to 39-21. Four minutes later, Jamestown put the nail in the coffin on a fourth down and five when Jackson Walters hit Hochhalter on a reverse for the game-sealing score.
Hochhalter was dominant the entire game, accounting for all seven Jamestown touchdowns. The senior had three rushing touchdowns, three passing touchdowns, and one touchdown catch. He also had two interceptions on defense.
Nate Walz led the Blue Jay receiving core with five receptions for 129 and two scores. Walters ended the game with a touchdown pass and two receptions for 34 yards and a touchdown. Jamestown finished with 479 yards of total offense and was plus one in the turnover column.
Jamestown repeats as state champions in 11A for the first time in school history, finishing the year at 10-2 overall. Payton Hochhalter was named the 11A Player of the Year and head coach Bill Nelson was named the 11A Coach of the Year.
