VALLEY CITY, ND  (NewsDakota.com)  The Viking basketball teams each recorded splits of the weekend in the NAIA Basketball Classic at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.

The Viking women rebounded from a 65-53 Saturday loss to Dakota Wesleyan, the 12th-ranked team in the nation, for a tight 67-63 win over Mount Marty on Sunday.

Adriana Torres continued a solid start to her season for the Vikings in the loss Saturday, with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  Ashlyn Diemert led the Vikings in scoring with 13 points.

Taryn Dieterle paced the Vikings with 15 points and nine rebounds in the win over Mount Marty on Saturday.  The Viking women are now 3-1 to start the year.

The Viking men rallied from a deficit to defeat Dakota Wesleyan 84-77 Saturday.  Vallcy City State trailed by 10 at halftime, then went on a late 18-3 run to top the Tigers.  Duoth Goch tallied 28 points on 11-18 shooting and added seven rebounds in the win.  Joseph Owens knocked in 21.

Owens capped a solid weekend with 23 points in the loss to Mount Marty Sunday.  The Viking defense struggled Sunday, allowing Marty to shoot 50% from the field, and 40.7% from the three-point line.  The Viking men are now 3-2.

Women’s play continues Friday at Bemidji State, while the men welcome the University of Jamestown to town Saturday.
