The University of Jamestown men’s soccer team won for the third time in its last four matches, defeating Mount Marty (S.D.) University 5-3 Wednesday evening at the Jimmie Turf Field.

Austin Shafer (SR/Jamestown, N.D.) recorded his second hat trick of the season, putting him at 12 goals, just two away from the Jimmie single-season mark of 14 set by Jade Johnson in 2012.

Shafer converted a penalty kick in the sixth minute for a 1-0 Jimmie lead, then Wade McWhorter (FR/Loveland, Colo.)’s corner kick led to a James Moody (SO/Southampton, England) goal in the 14th minute. Joel Hyland (SO/Manchester, England) then made it 3-0 with his goal in the 29th minute.

An own goal by the Jimmies put the Lancers on the board in the 54th minute, but Shafer scored twice in a span of 1:52 to give Jamestown a 5-1 edge.

Mount Marty made things interesting with goals in the 72nd and 73rd minutes, and looked to score again in the 87th only to be denied by UJ keeper Myles Ragar (FR/Billings, Mont.).

Shots were 13-9 in favor of Mount Marty. Ragar finished with seven saves on ten shots.

Next up for the Jimmies is a road match at Dordt (Iowa) University October 19 at 7 p.m.
