JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Libraries nationwide are adjusting to create a unique space that can be used for more than just books.
The James River Valley Library System (JRVLS) is working to give its patrons a variety of services they can access.
Library Director Joe Rector says one of these is their “Library of Things.” These trending sites feature a collection of objects that can be loaned and checked-out.
Rector says the Library of Things is an initiative that is currently being pushed by the North Dakota State Library. A grant is currently available to create more sites across North Dakota.
“As libraries have grown in their purpose as community hubs, they have begun to circulate materials outside of traditional books and media,” the state library states. “Libraries of Things can include many physical objects that are not considered ‘normal’ for libraries to circulate that are still of great benefit to their patrons. By circulating non-traditional materials, libraries will be able to further meet the needs of their patrons and larger community.”
The JRLVS is also expanding different services including a picture scanner at Alfred Dickey Public Library to convert slides and old pictures to digital.
Rector says they also have a Cricut machine and incoming 3D printer that will be free to use by members of the public.
