Horace, ND (NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City Hi-Liners traveled to Horace to take on the Hawks for the second of three homecoming games the Hi-Liners will play in. They would go 2-0 in homecoming games this season winning 56-0.
The first quarter saw the first two drives from the Hi-Liners score touchdowns. The first drive would start at the 18 yard line on Horace’s side of the field after a miffed punt. The quick drive would end after a 8 yard touchdown run from Gavin Gerhardt. The second drive would start farther back however the drive would still result in a touchdown after a Zach Sykora 1 yard touchdown run. The score after the first quarter would be 14-0.
The Hi-Liners would continue their dominance in the second quarter. Their opening drive for the quarter would result in a Gerhardt 45 yard touchdown run. The ensuing drive for the Hawks resulted in a punt which Gerhardt would receive on the the Hawks 49 yard line. He would go return the ball all the way to the endzone for his 3rd touchdown of the game. The Hawks then started moving the ball down the field on the next drive. However that would come to a halt as Aiden Jacobson would pick off Taylor Stefonowicz and return the ball to his own 45. The drive would end with a 35 yard touchdown pass to Jacobson from Bryson Heck for a touchdown. The Hawks would get one more drive in at the end of the half and march the ball down the field. However Gerhardt would intercept the ball in the endzone to prevent the Hawks from scoring. The score would be 35-0 after the first half.
The third quarter saw the Hi-Liners stopped for the first time all game. The Hawks offense was still struggling to solve the Valley City defense on the following drive and were forced to kick it away. The Hi-Liners would then march up the field and the drive resulted in a 1 yard touchdown run from Bryson Heck. That would be the only scoring in the quarter and it would be 42-0 going into the fourth.
The Hi-Liners would bring in several freshman into the game in the final quarter and Corbyn Powell shined. He would get a two touchdowns in the quarter. For the first one he broke through several tackles and carried the ball into the endzone from 24 yards out. The second one started after he would recover a fumble and return it to the Hawks 14 yard line. He would then run into the endzone from 1 yard out. The game would end 56-0.
Gavin Gerhardt was named the Ivy Real Estate Group Player of the Game. He would rush for 92 yards on 7 carries, have 2 rushing touchdowns, and return the ball 79 yards on 3 attempts with 1 touchdown.
