Oakes, ND (NewsDakota.com) – The #6 Oakes Tornadoes took down the Edgley-Kulm-Montpelier (EKM) Rebels 3 sets to 1 during Homecoming Week Volleyball to get their first District win of the Season.

The Tornadoes struck early in set one and were able to lead by at least 6 points for most of the set. The Tornadoes were also able to pick up 3 aces as well in that first set. They took set one by a score of 25-18.

Set two was an intense back and forth. First the Rebels had a 9-5 lead then Laikyn Roney started serving and before long the Tornadoes were up 17-10. That lead would not last however as the Rebels would storm back with serving from Reagan Teske and Libby Mathern bringing them back on top 22-19. The Rebels would win the set 25-21.

Set three started out close as the Rebels were remaining a point or two away from the Tornadoes to start however Paige Bakke went to serve and the Tornadoes went on a 9 point rally switching the score from trailing 15-12 to leading 21-15.  The Tornadoes would take the set 25-18.

The Tornadoes were able to do enough in set four to take the win. They kept a 5-6 point cushion between them and the Rebels for most of the match the closest it got was 20-18 late in the set but the Tornadoes were able to finish off the match winning 25-21.

Oakes picked up their first District win rising to 1-1 in the District and 10-4 overall. EKM falls to 0-2 in District play and 1-4 overall.

Both teams now head to the Optimist Tournament in Valley City on Saturday.
