PENDLETON, Ore. (jimmiepride.com) — Eve Hoppe (JR/Temecula, Calif.) scored in the 83rd minute to break a 1-1 tie and the University of Jamestown women’s soccer team won its first match of the season Friday afternoon, defeating No. 4 Oregon Tech 2-1.

The neutral site match was originally scheduled to be played in La Grande, Ore., but poor air quality forced the start time to start an hour later and a change of venue to Pendleton, Ore.

After being held without a goal in its first two matches, Jamestown got on the board courtesy of a 20th minute goal by Gaby Sarkis (SO/Campbelltown, Sydney, Australia). Both teams put a shot on target in the opening minutes, but it was the Jimmies who were able to score first.

Oregon Tech had back-to-back opportunities off the foot of Shalynai Naputi, but both shots were saved by Jimmie keeper Tea Pence (FR/Hamilton, Ohio). UJ had two additional shots on target in the opening forty-five minutes, a 30th minute shot by Cassandra Diaz (SR/Montebello, Calif.) and a 44th minute attempt by Sarkis.

The Owls got the equalizer in the 58th minute from Ashley Hart, assisted by Jissel Valencia. UJ managed only a 51st minute shot on goal by Miarosa Gyllenswan (SO/Menifee, Calif.) and Oregon Tech an 83rd minute shot by Kiah Wetzell as both teams were unable to establish offensive control.

Forty seconds after Pence’s save of Wetzell, Hoppe notched her first of the season to put the Jimmies in front. That goal would hold up to be the winner, as Oregon Tech had shot attempts go high and wide right of the goal in the final six minutes.

Pence stopped six shots for UJ, who outshot the Owls 13-11 but were even with seven shots on goal each. Sarkis and Diaz both put two shots on target.

Jamestown (1-2-0) is off Saturday before returning to action Sunday against Northwest (Wash.) University at 4:30 p.m.
