Valley City, ND (NEWSDAKOTA.com) – The VCSU Vikings came up just short in a defensive duel against the Concordia-Moorhead Cobbers. They fell by a score of 14-12.
The first half was a defensive shootout with 3-and-outs being the name of the game. No one was able to get a solid blow on offense till near the end of 1st quarter when the Vikings were able to get down to the red zone however penalties would force them out of it. They attempted a field goal however Masila Suia sent it left.
No one would get close to the red zone again till half way through the third quarter when the Vikings marched down the field with true Freshman Noah Chambers and were able to get a touchdown after a Taylor Simmons 2 yard run. Suia was unable to get the extra point.
The Cobbers were unable to put anything together until the 4th quarter when they were the beneficiaries of several big penalties that moved up the field from their own 3 yard line all the way to their 47 yard line. Cooper Mattern through a 53 yard touchdown catch/run to Dawson Schafer.
The Cobbers would not be done however after they picked off Noah Chambers they would benefit off of another penalty which pushed them into the red zone. Peyton Mortenson would finish off the drive with a 6 yard touchdown run to put the Cobbers up 14-6.
Noah Chambers would then step up and bring the team down the field. He would throw a dart to Justin Cruz who would run down the field to score on a 59 yard touchdown pass on a 4th and 5. They were then not able to get the 2 point conversion.
They would get one last chance after a defensive stop and Chambers marched the team down to the 27 yard line with 10 seconds left. The Viking’s would bring on Suia for a 43 yard field goal attempt which he missed. The game would end 14-12.
Justin Cruz was named the Ivy Real Estate Group Player of the Game.
The Vikings now have a bye week and will take on Dickinson State on the 17th for Homecoming.
