Coach Nielsen’s Thoughts:
Red River is tough #1-7. They have the strokes, the swagger, and the discipline. Currently, they are the favorite to win the state title and they showed it today.
Kai and Alex played some amazing points in doubles, taking over the net an putting away overheads. Kai played looser in singles today and had excellent points with Espen coming to the net with good approaches. Alex settled in against a #3 player that would play #1 for most teams and found a way to make each point and game competitive.
Trey and Max were hot and cold in their doubles. They would play one rally six strokes and then finish it at the net or with a passing shot and the next point was an unforced error on shot two. They showed moments of brilliance – and we know they will have stretches of brilliance moving forward leading to a sustained high level of play.
Miles and Emmett started down in set one, but were able to come back and force a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Red River got a few lucky bounces to take the lead. Miles and Emmett weren’t able to bring themselves back up mentally to fight back. Emmett and Miles both are fantastic players. Once they believe this themselves – and they are able to stay up mentally and emotionally through bad luck, unforced errors, or their opponent making some shots – they will finish sets like this off.
Casey and Kellen played for the first time together today. They both are aggressive at the net. They will be together for the Sheyenne Invite in hopes that Kellen continues to improve his doubles game for next season. Casey found his strokes in singles. He really followed through leading to consistency and competitive points and games.
Gavin bounced back from a 6-0 loss and was a few points away in his second match from tying it up at 5-5. He stayed in the moment better which helped him with consistency. Emery played up with the varsity exhibition as a 7th grader. He is going to be a part of Hi-Liner tennis for 6 years and today he learned some tough lessons on the court. He will bounce back and have an open mindset to keep improving.
The JV faced off with a very tough Red River team and took some lumps in the early matches, but didn’t get discouraged and finished strong. All the JV had bright spots, but we had really strong performances form Jon, Quin, Cole, Noah, and Jared who all earned a win. Everyone played great and our entire JV squad is showing amazing improvements early in the season. It was awesome to see the entire team not get down in the early matches and continue to fight and improve as the match went along.
Next action for the Hi-Liners is Thursday playing Shanley at Island Park at 4pm.
