JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – After the Stutsman County Commission denied the James River Valley Library System’s request to return funding it cut last year, they’ve since started to look at ways service will be affected moving forward.
Library Director Joe Rector says they respect that the Commission has a tough job balancing the funding needs of all county entities, library funding included.
Rector says the Library Board has already stated that cuts to service will have to be made at the Stutsman County Library.
Rector also addressed the commissions motion to recommend closing the Stutsman County Library. Due to the special nature of the meeting, the commission could not make or vote on a motion of that type.
He also touched on the group of people who observed patrons of the Stutsman County Library. In an August special commission meeting, Commissioner Joan Morris made reference to a public vote held in 2008 where residents supported consolidating the Stutsman County Library (SCL) into the Alfred Dickey Public Library (ADPL) and maintain bookmobile services to rural communities.
Morris stated that in their observations, it was observed that only one and a half patrons per hour were reported at the SCL. Rector says he’s disappointed in how the situation was handled.
Rector says he doesn’t agree with the number presented to the commissioners at the meeting.
In other library information, Rector shared programming at both libraries and ways to connect with both Alfred Dickey Public Library and the Stutsman County Library. Visit jrvls.org for more information.
