ST. LOUIS, Mo. (jimmiepride.com)– Jayden Boelter scored in the 59th minute to lift No. 10 University of the Cumberlands to a 1-0 win over the University of Jamestown women’s soccer team Sunday afternoon in a neutral site match.
After an opening half that saw Cumberlands hold a 9-3 edge in shots, the teams entered the intermission scoreless.
Gaby Sarkis (SO/Campbelltown, Sydney, Australia) had the Jimmies’ first shot in the 8th minute, but it went wide left of the goal. UJ’s second shot came in the 34th minute off the foot of Eve Hoppe (JR/Temecula, Calif.) and was saved by keeper Laura Vogt.
Cumberlands came out on the offensive after the break, getting four shots off inside the first 10 minutes of the second, two of which were saved by UJ keeper Tea Pence (FR/Hamilton, Ohio).
In the 59th minute, Boelter broke the deadlock with an assist by Ana Madahil to make it 1-0.
The Jimmies got their first shot of the second half from Aubree Gessel (SR/Temecula, Calif.) in the 76th minute. Jamestown’s best chance of scoring an equalizer came in the 87th minute as Sarkis headed a corner kick from Ryley Bedard (SR/Long Beach, Calif.), only to be denied by the Cumberlands defense.
Shots ended 22-5 in favor of Cumberlands, who also had a 12-3 edge in shots on target. Pence finished with eight saves.
Jamestown (0-2-0) will be in Oregon September 2-5, for matches against No. 4 Oregon Tech, Northwest University, and Eastern Oregon University.
