Searle Swedlund (center) cuts the ribbon with Jamestown Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors after rebranding to “Jamestown Tourism” in 2014.

JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Searle Swedlund is approaching his final days with Jamestown Tourism after announcing his resignation earlier this month.

In nearly 10 years, Swedlund has overseen the growth of various historic sites, helped create the Jamestown Calendar, established programs such as the Talking Trails, and the continued support of different events that would support bringing in visitors and dollars to the community.

Swedlund says one of the first projects was growing the National Buffalo Museum’s visitation and footprint.

From there, the National Buffalo Museum underwent an extensive renovation project that now features a small theatre that explains the history of the American bison and doubled the admission of the site.

Swedlund says he was able to excel in the role due to being an “outsider” at the time while working at Concordia College in Moorhead.

He added that he takes pride knowing he’ll always have had a helping hand in growing the tourism experience in Jamestown. He says establishing the connections and trust with people and organizations really helped take Jamestown to the next level.

At this time, the Jamestown Tourism board is beginning their search to replace Swedlund as he makes his move to Morris, MN in September. He says he’ll continue to have a hand in some Jamestown projects as the baton is passed to his successor.

Swedlund pointed out that there may also be a shift in what Jamestown Tourism has been into what it could be and grow into in the future.

Swedlund will be working in economic development at the Upper Minnesota Valley Regional Development Commission in Morris, Minn. A farewell will be held for Swedlund on Wednesday, Aug. 31 from 3 to 5 PM at the Jamestown Arts Center and is open to all.
