JAMESTOWN, ND. (NewsDakota.com) – The University of Jamestown football season begins under the lights for the first time on August 25th at Hansen Stadium against bitter rival Valley City State.

The Jimmies will be led defensively this season by a young group of corners, as well as some experienced defensive linemen, including fifth-year senior Vincent Corral, who says although he may not be a vocal leader, he knows how important being a positive force in the locker room can be.

Last season, led by defense coordinator Shane Clancy, the Jimmies created 20 turnovers against the highest competition in NAIA football. This year, Clancy and the UJ defense are focused more on the basics.

Getting back to the basics of tackling all started during the spring, which Clancy said is some of the most important time for younger players to improve their game.

Focusing on the simple things has helped defensive linemen like Corral get more comfortable within the scheme the Jimmies run, no matter who Jamestown is playing on a given week.

UJ still has work to do on the defensive side coming into the 2022 season after finishing 10th in the GPAC in both points and yards allowed last season. For Clancy, getting back to the fundamentals this offseason has allowed the messaging to stay consistent, similar to the consistency of head coach Brian Mistro’s messaging since day one on campus.

The black and orange kick off the college football season with the Paint Bucket Game at 7:00 PM on Thursday, August 25th. Coverage of the game can be heard on Jamestown 107.1 FM or 1400 AM.
