WEST FARGO, ND. (NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown Post 14 Eagles used a strong pitching performance from Mason Lunzman and a six-run fifth inning on Tuesday night to take down the #2 Bismarck Governors 8-3 in the opening round of the AA Legion Baseball State Tournament.
The #7 seeded Eagles jumped in front of Bismarck 2-0 in the third inning after Jacoby Nold doubled in the gap to drive in Connor Hoyt and Jackson Walters. Jamestown wouldn’t hold that lead for very long though as the Governors put up three runs in the bottom of the frame off a bases-clearing double from Bismarck’s Noah Riedinger.
Jamestown trailed 3-2 until the bats lit up in a big way in the fifth. The Eagles posted six runs off of six hits with Carson Orr and Hoyt both driving in two runs in the fifth inning. Jamestown sent nine batters to the plate, using the big inning to propel them past Bismarck.
Lunzman was dominant for Jamestown on the hill, going 6.2 innings and striking out seven while throwing 109 pitches. The Eagles lefty allowed seven hits in total and Thomas Newman picked up the final out to get Jamestown the victory.
At the plate, both Walters and Nold were 3-for-4. Hoyt finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Max Fronk and Preston Gall each drove in a run while collecting two hits. As a team, the Eagles posted 14 total hits and did not commit an error defensively.
Post 14 now moves into the winners’ bracket and will play West Fargo Wednesday night at 7:30 PM in West Fargo. Coverage of the Eagles in the AA Legion Baseball State Tournament can be heard on Jamestown 1071/1400, online at newsdakota.com, or on the Jamestown 107.1 app.
