LAMOURE, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Oakes Post 36 Legion baseball team advances to the championship game of the winner’s bracket in the District 7 Legion Baseball Tournament after a 3-1 win over Lisbon.
The first four innings saw no runs and only a combined three hits thanks to brilliant pitching from Oakes’ starter Fletcher Willprecht and Lisbon’s starter Simon Sveum. The fifth inning is when both pitchers started to feel some fatigue and struggled against each team’s third time through the hitting order. Oakes started the scoring with catcher Gaven Christianson hitting a ground ball through the legs of Lisbon’s third baseman Brandt Levos which brought home Willprecht for the first run of the day. Left-fielder Steele Hansen proceeded to hit an RBI single to go up 2-0. Lisbon was able to respond with an RBI single of their own from first baseman Grady Wehlander to cut the lead in half. However, Oakes was able to score another run with an RBI walk from Howie Neustel with bases loaded.
Willprecht went the distance pitching seven innings allowing just one walk, five hits and one earned run while striking out eight in the win.
Post 36 will take on LaMoure Post 19 tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. for the right to play in the championship game on Thursday. You can hear the game on KDDR 1220 AM/100.3 FM The Tornado, stream it online at newsdakota.com, or on The Tornado app.
