JAMESTOWN, N.D. (UJ) – The University of Jamestown has added the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering to its wide array of undergraduate degrees.
Civil Engineering is the third major offered through the University’s Department of Engineering, joining Mechanical Engineering and Environmental Science. The degree will be available to students at the beginning of the fall semester at UJ, which begins August 22.
“We are proud to offer the degree in civil engineering as part of our growing engineering program at University of Jamestown,” said Dr. Chris Redfearn, Dean of the Undergraduate College. “At UJ, students receive sound professional preparation for their chosen careers within the context of a liberal arts education, and that is certainly true in our engineering programs. Our dedicated and knowledgeable faculty have professional experience in the field and are ready to help our students achieve their career goals.”
One of those faculty, Engineering Department Chair and Associate Professor Cherish Bauer-Reich, said that those majoring in Civil Engineering at UJ will have access to great opportunities here in Jamestown.
“I’m very excited to be adding the Civil Engineering major,” Bauer-Reich said. “Local companies have expressed an interest in the program, and we are confident that there will be numerous opportunities for internships and work experiences locally and regionally.”
The Department of Engineering at UJ provides its students with an integrated curriculum that blends liberal arts, mathematics, science, and engineering. Supported by the liberal arts tradition at the core of the University’s mission, this comprehensive education prepares engineering students to obtain licensure, lead projects and teams, and make meaningful contributions to the profession.
Students majoring in civil or mechanical engineering at the University of Jamestown have the unique opportunity to learn in small classes, enabling them to interact closely with their professors. The department’s size also means that students work closely alongside those in the other majors, which contributes to their depth of knowledge in multiple fields of study.
“The addition of this program will also add to the interdisciplinarity of our existing engineering program,” Professor Bauer-Reich said, “as these students will learn side-by-side with our mechanical engineering and environmental science students.”
