VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City Legion Post 60 Royals welcomed East Grand Forks Post 157 to town on Monday. In a game that saw almost everything there is to see in the game of baseball, Valley City would come away with the walk-off 9-8 win in the bottom of the 7th inning.
The game started off great for Valley City. Ethan Miller, Braxton Jorissen, Gavin Gerhardt, and Max Mehus would all score in the 4-run inning. Gerhardt would provide an RBI with a single, and with the help of some sloppy defense from East Grand Forks, the Royals would send 8 batters to the plate in the inning. The second inning saw Valley City add on a pair of runs. Braxton Jorissen would bring home Adam Bitz with and RBI triple, Jorissen would then score on a sac fly from Gavin Gerhardt to give Valley City the 6-0 lead.
The top of the 3rd inning saw the Post 157 offense come to life. East grand Forks would score 5-runs in the inning. Carson Belbas would provide an RBI single, and Logan Spencer an RBI double, but then Robert Fischer would get Grand Forks to strand the bases loaded. Trailing by a run, East Grand Forks wasted no time in taking their first lead of the ball game. In the top of the 4th inning Post 157 would get RBI singles from Logan Spencer and Tanner Nowacki to take the 8-6 lead. Valley City would threaten in the bottom of the 4th when they had runners at first and second with nobody out, only to hit into a triple play.
In the top of the 7th inning East Grand Forks would have runners at 2nd and 1st with no outs when they would bunt one back to Will Schwehr, who was on the mound, and the right hander made the clean play and went to third base to get the lead runner on the force play. After a walk to load the bases, Schwehr would then strike out the next 2 batters to strand the bases loaded again for Post 157. In the home half of the 7th Gavin Gerhardt would lead off the inning with a single. After a pitching change and back to back strike outs, and a stolen base, Gerhardt was at 2nd with 2 outs. Max Mehus a right handed batter would step to the plate. Mehus would stay patient and with the right fielder playing closer to center, realizing he had all the space in the opposite field, the Royal would poke one out into right field scoring Gerhardt from 2nd base and giving Valley City the walk-off 9-8 win.
The Royals will be home on Tuesday when they will host Kindred in a double header. First pitch for game 1 is scheduled for 5:00PM.
