JAMESTOWN, ND. (NewsDakota.com) – A nine-run fifth inning by Jamestown’s Post 14 Eagles opened up the floodgates in a 16-3 win by mercy rule over the Gillette Riders (WY) in seven innings on Wednesday night.

Gillette took an initial 2-0 lead in this nine-inning game but that didn’t stop Post 14 from getting the bats going. Jamestown poured on 15 hits in total off of five different Gillette pitchers in an all-around team victory. Connor Hoyt had the loudest base knock of the evening in the third when the senior homered to right field. The Eagles were also patient on Wednesday, drawing nine walks and being hit by a pitch three different times.

Jamestown scored four runs in the second, three in the third, and one in the fourth before the massive fifth inning. Gage Orr was 2-for-2 with a pair of singles, an RBI, as well as four runs scored. Hoyt was also 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a single. Jackson Walters recorded a team-high three hits and drove in a run while also scoring once. All in all, nine different Eagles recorded at least one hit on the night.

Starting pitcher Payton Hochhalter grabbed the win for Jamestown by going five innings and allowing three earned runs. The right-hander struck out two before handing the ball over to Mason Lunzman who went two scoreless innings in relief. Lunzman also struck out two and worked himself out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth.

The Eagles, now 8-13 overall, host the Phil Brown Classic starting on July 8th at Jack Brown Stadium. Post 14 will play four total games this weekend beginning on Friday at 7:00 PM against Mandan.
