JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – In a special meeting on Wednesday, June 1st, the Jamestown City Council discussed the different options for 12th Avenue SE from 3rd St. to 6th St.

In cooperation with the North Dakota Department of Transportation and Federal Highway Administration, planning was needed for roadway improvements along the three-block stretch.

Jamestown Mayor Dwaine Heinrich.

The city was given four options to choose from including no build, reconstructing 12th Ave., realigning 12th Avenue with 11th Ave., or realigning to create an 11 1/2 Ave.

Councilman David Steele started the conversation, saying he supported realigning to 11th Avenue.

Steele argued that the issue of left-turn safety and a lower cost for Alternate B2 were his reasons for realigning to an already established Avenue.

Councilmember Brian Kamlitz agreed.

Councilmember Dan Buchanan originally supported Alternate B1, or creating an 11 1/2 Ave. After consideration, he says he strongly supported Alternate B2.

Mayor Heinrich voiced his support for Alternate B1.

Heinrich says they would only need to work with one landowner to do 11 1/2 Ave.

Councilmember David Schloegel gave his reasonings for supporting Alternate B2.

The Council voted 4 to 1 in favor of Alternate B, or readjusting to connect 12th Ave. SE to 11th Avenue SE. Mayor Heinrich voted in opposition.

The cost for Alternate B2 is approximately $1,115,000 and 80% would be covered in Federal Funding. The rest would be covered in 20% state funding.
