GRAND FORKS, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City Hi-Liners dropped their opening game of the EDC tournament on Tuesday on the road against Grand Forks Red River. That set up a must win game on Friday afternoon as the tournament shifted to Scheels Sports Field in Grand Forks. The Hi-Liners offense came to play as they break open the game early and win to advance to play on Saturday with the 14-0 win over Devils Lake.
Devils lake started at the top of the 1st inning by having the bases loaded. After Valley City pitch Autumn McGough took a line drive off of her non-throwing hand, she would get out of the inning without allowing a run. The Valley City offense would strike right away in the bottom of the 1st inning thanks to 2 fielding errors by the Firebirds. Jada Nelson and Autumn McGough would come across to give the Hi-Liners the early 2-0 lead. The offense would only build from there as in the bottom of the 2nd inning Emma Langemo would drive in a pair of runs on a double. Langemo would also score in the inning on an RBI single from Sydney Larson. In all, the Hi-Liners would score 3-times in the inning and extend their lead to 5-0. Valley City would add another 3-runs in the bottom of the 3rd. Langemo once again driving in a pair of runs, this time with a single. The Hi-Liners would put the game out of reach in the bottom of the 4th inning when they would plate 6 runs. Four hits in the inning would provide runs for Valley City and extend their lead to 14-0. The Hi-Liners would go hang on to that score for the win.
On the mound Autumn McGough got the start and went all 5 innings in the shortened game. McGough would only allow 2 hits, wouldn’t allow a run, and would strike out 6 Devils Lake batters.
