HUNTER, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – If you are a fan of offense, this was not the game for you. It was a pitcher’s duel in the purest form in Hunter between Northern Cass and Oakes in which the Jaguars won by a final score of 2-1.
Northern Cass left-handed starting pitcher Jack Metzger pitched an absolute gem in front of his home crowd striking out 13 Tornado hitters Wednesday afternoon. Only three Tornadoes could boast that they got a hit against the southpaw. Metzger pitched a complete game and only walked one batter, allowing just three hits and zero earned runs.
Oakes right-handed starting pitcher Howie Neustel also had a very impressive performance. He gave up just two earned runs, four hits, four walks and struck out six Jaguar batters.
Despite their struggles, Oakes was first to score in the second inning. Second baseman James Throener hit a ground ball in the infield, but Northern Cass committed an error that allowed right-fielder Gaven Christianson to score. Northern Cass was able to answer with a run of their own in the third to tie the game at one run apiece. In the bottom of the sixth, the Jaguars had just one hit on the afternoon, but they were able to string together three consecutive hits including the game-winning RBI-double by third baseman Carter Osland.
Oakes drops to 5-6 in Region 1 play and 5-8 overall with the loss. Their final game of the regular season will be on Monday, May 16th at home versus Hankinson. First pitch will be at 5:00 p.m. and pregame coverage will start at 4:45 p.m. on 1220 AM/100.3 FM The Tornado. You can also stream the game on NewsDakota.com, and on The Tornado app.
