CRETE, Neb.– The University of Jamestown men’s track and field team had three All-Conference performances as the GPAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships concluded on Saturday.
Braedon Gumke (JR/Watford City, N.D.) qualified for the NAIA Outdoor National Championships later this month, clearing 4.70 meters (15 feet, 5 inches) to finish second. Gumke cleared his second attempt at 4.40 meters, then missed his first two attempts at 4.55 meters. On his third and final attempt, Gumke made it over the bar and advanced to 4.70 meters. Again, Gumke’s first two tries were no good, but he came through on the third to move on to 4.80 meters. With just Gumke and Zach Bennetts of Concordia (Neb.) remaining, neither vaulter was able to make 4.80 meters, and Bennetts claimed first by virture of fewer misses (Bennetts made 4.55 meters on his first try).
Jorden Morales (SO/Phoenix, Ariz.) claimed fourth in the discus with a top mark of 48.41 meters (158 feet, 10 inches), setting a new personal best and bettering his previous nationals qualifying mark. Morales marked 48.01 and 48.07 meters before fouling on his third try. Not allowing the foul to affect his form, Morales turned in his best mark on attempt number four.
Nik Herman (SR/Glasgow, Mont.) placed eighth in the javelin, with a top throw of 47.06 meters (154 feet, 5 inches). Also scoring points for the UJ men was the 4×100 relay team of Chris Sayler (SO/Jamestown, N.D.), Nasim Green (SO/Pennsauken, N.J.), Samuel Kludt (SR/Hettinger, N.D.), and Braeden Knutson (SO/Casselton, N.D.), placing seventh in 43.05 seconds; and the 4×800 relay team of Micah Hoke (FR/Jamestown, N.D.), Alex Walker (FR/Lakewood, Colo.), David Martin (SO/Wasco, Calif.), and Kanyon Vermillion (FR/Henderson, Nev.), placing eighth in 8:23.00.
Jamestown finished 10th of 11 teams overall with 17 points. Doane (Neb.) was first, followed by Dordt (Iowa), and Concordia (Neb.)
