VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City Hi-Liners baseball and softball teams were in action on the road on Thursday. The baseball team lost their game to Grand Forks Central 9 to 1, and the softball team lost their game 14-13 to West Fargo Sheyenne.
Baseball: Grand Forks Central 9 Valley City 1
Valley City Hi-Liners baseball team fell behind early and couldn’t come back in a 9-1 loss to Grand Forks Central on Thursday. Grand Forks Central scored on a single by Wyatt Wockenfuss and an error in the first inning.
The Valley City Hi-Liners Varsity struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Grand Forks Central, giving up nine runs.
Grand Forks Central opened up scoring in the first inning. Grand Forks Central scored two runs when Wockenfuss singled.
Grand Forks Central scored four runs in the fifth inning. Grand Forks Central offense in the inning was led by Chance Colgrove, Jack Jahnke, and Aiden Lee, who each had RBIs in the inning.
Jahnke was the winning pitcher for Grand Forks Central. The bulldog surrendered one run on six hits over six and two-thirds innings, striking out 14 and walking one. Colgrove threw one-third of an inning in relief out of the bullpen.
Max Mehus took the loss for Valley City Hi-Liners Varsity. Mehus allowed six hits and seven runs over four innings, striking out three and walking one.
Devyn Thornton, Joe Cummings, Broden Muske, Kai Kringlie, Ethan Miller, and Gavin Gerhardt all had one hit to lead Valley City Hi-Liners Varsity.
Grand Forks Central had nine hits in the game. Cole Barta, Wockenfuss, and Colgrove all managed multiple hits for Grand Forks Central. Barta went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Grand Forks Central in hits.
Coach Seth Soderholm had this to say following the games, “Struggled to get going offensively. We played solid defense but they can swing it. They find a lot of barrels and they’re a tough team to play from behind.”
Softball: West Fargo Sheyenne 14 Valley City 13
The Hi-Liners softball team return to game action Thursday night. Valley City battled hard the entire game and even took a 13-11 lead going into the bottom of the 7th inning. The Mustangs would plate 3 runs in the home half of the 7th to propel them to the win.
The Hi-Liners would blast 20 hits in the game. The offense was lead by Autumn McGough who would go 4 for 5 with 4 RBI’s and scoring 1 run. Not far behind was Hadley Thoreson who also went 4 for 5, and she would score 3 runs.
