VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The city of Valley City is monitoring dikes, clay levees and flood walls as the Sheyenne River continues to rise. The river is forecast to crest at 18.5 feet next week.

Baldhill dam resource manager Rich Schueneman gave this report during the April 29th meeting.

Barnes County Emergency Manager Sue Lloyd said county residents south of Valley City are anticipating the closing of two bridges on Saturday along the Kathryn road.

Lloyd talked about how county residents can sign out for a county notification system by calling 845-8181.

City Administrator Gwen Crawford said the city is asking for volunteers to help monitor dikes and the help with the call center hotline 701-890-7848.

Crawford and Public Works Director Clint Klemisch strongly urged the residents of Valley City to limit their water usage. Refrain from washing cars, doing laundry or taking a bath. These steps will help take pressure off the master lift station.

Filled sandbags are available for Barnes County residents from 8am to 6pm at the Fire Hall in Valley City until further notice. All residents are asked to stay off all dikes and levees in Valley City during this flooding event, there is a $500 fine for those walking on the dikes in Valley City.
