(NDAgConnection.com) – For the week ending Sunday, there were 0.2 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Reports indicated that, on average, producers intend to begin fieldwork on May 4. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 7% very short, 19% short, 57% adequate, and 17% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 11% very short, 28% short, 52% adequate, and 9% surplus.

Spring wheat planted was 4%, behind 21% last year, and near 8% for the five-year average.

Durum wheat planted was 1%, behind 10% last year, and near 4% average.

Winter wheat condition rated 3% very poor, 13% poor, 33% fair, 46% good, and 5% excellent. Winter wheat jointed was 14%, near 15% last year, but ahead of 6% average.

Barley planted was 1%, behind 13% last year, and near 4% average.

Dry edible peas planted was 1%, behind 7% last year, and near 5% average.

Cattle and calf conditions rated 4% very poor, 14% poor, 36% fair, 43% good, and 3% excellent. Cattle and calf death loss rated 24% heavy, 59% average, and 17% light. Calving progress was 69% complete, behind 75% last year, and equal to average.

Sheep and lamb conditions rated 3% very poor, 9% poor, 30% fair, 53% good, and 5% excellent. Sheep and lamb death loss rated 11% heavy, 68% average, and 21% light. Lambing progress was 86% complete, near 85% last year and 83% average. Shearing progress was 90% complete, near 91% last year.

Hay and roughage supplies rated 33% very short, 36% short, 31% adequate, and 0% surplus.

Stock water supplies rated 8% very short, 25% short, 59% adequate, and 8% surplus.
