VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Several volunteers helped firefighters and others sandbag some areas of the city on Sunday, April 24th. The city wanted to thank those who volunteered their time.

The city of Fargo donated already made sandbags to the city of Valley City. Fargo Mayor Tim Mahoney said it was fortunate that the city had several thousand sandbags filled and ready to transport to Valley City. He said it’s nice to help out another community in need on short notice.

City Administrator Gwen Crawford said city officials are asking motorists to avoid driving on city streets near the river. She said some motorists are hindering city public works crews working on flood walls and building clay dikes. The city is asking motorist to avoid areas of the city where work is in progress.

The Sheyenne River in Valley City was holding steady at 15.8 feet on Sunday, April 24th. The forecast for 18.5 feet has now been pushed back to Sunday, April 30th.

Baldhill dam resource manager Rich Schueneman said the U.S Army Corps of Engineers is releasing 3,500 cubic feet per second of water out of Baldhill dam. The corps plans to release 5,500 cubic feet per second of water out of Baldhill dam on Sunday, April 30th.

Schueneman said that projected release out of Baldhill dam is subject to change depending on weather related conditions and inflows that come into Lake Ashtabula in the days ahead.
