VALLEY CITY – Valley City State’s Joelle Lamontagne picked up a pair of wins, including a complete game shutout, as the Vikings swept Thursday’s conference doubleheader against Mayville State.

Lamontagne pitched a complete game shutout in 6 innings and allowed just three hits in the game as VCSU defeated Mayville by run rule, 8-0. She also pitched 4 innings in relief to pick up a win in game two by final score of 10-4.

Valley City State improves to 25-14 overall this season and 12-4 in the NSAA. Mayville State drops to 8-21 overall and 5-9 in conference play.

UP NEXT: The VCSU Softball team travels to Waldorf for a 4-game conference series on Sunday and Monday. Mayville travels to Viterbo on Saturday and Sunday.

VCSU 8, Mayville 0 (6 innings)
Joelle Lamontagne allowed just three Comet hits and struck out three batters in her second complete game shutout of the season. She now holds a 15-6 record as VCSU’s main starting pitcher. The Vikings posted a pair of runs four different innings, kicked off by a two-run blast by Sierra Crocker in the bottom of the second.

Marissa Hawkins added a two-run single in the third inning, and Joelle Aiello later scored on a wild pitch in the fourth. Riley Perryman and Ashlynne Copinga each scored on an error by second baseman Taylor Stegman, and a sacrifice fly from Hawkins scored Aiello to finish the game by mercy rule.

Anne-Elise Gest had two hits, and Jessica Husband and Andrea Rodriguez each doubled for the Vikings. Aiello and Perryman each scored two runs, and Hawkins drove in three.

Payton Doerksen got the loss in the circle after allowing seven runs on eight hits. She walked two and struck out one in 5 innings of work. Sidney Fairbanks pitched 1/3 of an inning in relief and gave up VCSU’s final run. Ashlyn Tingey had two of Mayville’s three hits in the game.

VCSU 10, Mayville 4
Valley City State scored five insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure a 10-4 victory in game two over Mayville Thursday.

The Vikings scored a pair of runs in the first inning on a sac fly from Jessica Husband and an RBI single from Anne-Elise Gest. Mayville tied the game in the second inning with a run on a fielder’s choice by Erika Howell who later scored on a wild pitch. Mayville then took a 4-2 lead on a two-run single by Ashlyn Tingey in the third inning.

It was all VCSU from there, starting with a solo home run by Riley Perryman in the bottom of the third, and the Vikings took a 5-4 lead when two more runs came across on a dropped fly ball in the fifth inning.

The Vikings added five more runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a three-run blast from Marissa Hawkins. A sacrifice fly from pinch hitter Saige Forseth and an RBI single from Ashlynne Copinga rounded out scoring in the game.

Brooke Gaudry started in the circle and went 3 innings for the Vikings. She allowed four runs on seven hits and walked one batter. Lamontagne pitched 4 innings in relief, allowed just three hits and struck out two batters to get the win.

Hawkins went 3-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and scored two runs for the Vikings. Gest and Perryman each went 2-for-3, and Perryman swiped the plate three times. Aiello, Husband, Ashlyn Diemert and Mikayla Johnson each scored a run for VCSU.

Mayville’s Courtney Boll got the loss in the circle after allowing seven runs on eight hits. She walked two and struck out four. Annika Seedborg started the game for the Comets and allowed three runs on four hits, walked two and struck out two.

Tingey went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Mayville State. Bailey Larkin and Mackenzie Hughes each had two hits in the game, including a double apiece.
