Reports indicated that, on average, producers intend to begin fieldwork on May 1. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 17% very short, 22% short, 53% adequate, and 8% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 23% very short, 32% short, 40% adequate, and 5% surplus.
Spring wheat planted was 3%, behind 12% last year, and near 4% for the five-year average.
Durum wheat planted was 1%, behind 6% last year, and near 2% average.
Winter wheat condition rated 3% very poor, 20% poor, 40% fair, 35% good, and 2% excellent. Winter wheat jointed was 12%, near 9% last year, and ahead of 3% average.
Barley planted was 1%, behind 7% last year, and near 2% average.
Dry edible peas planted was 1%, near 3% last year, and equal to average.
Cattle and calf conditions rated 3% very poor, 14% poor, 39% fair, 41% good, and 3% excellent. Cattle and calf death loss rated 20% heavy, 60% average, and 20% light. Calving progress was 60% complete, behind 66% last year, and equal to average.
Sheep and lamb conditions rated 2% very poor, 7% poor, 32% fair, 55% good, and 4% excellent. Sheep and lamb death loss rated 8% heavy, 61% average, and 31% light. Lambing progress was 81% complete, equal to last year, and ahead of 76% average. Shearing progress was 85% complete, near 87% last year.
Hay and roughage supplies rated 28% very short, 36% short, 36% adequate, and 0% surplus.
Stock water supplies rated 14% very short, 26% short, 58% adequate, and 2% surplus.
