(NDAgConnection.com) – Senate and House lawmakers voted Thursday to suspend Russia’s and Belarus’ Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) status with the United States and to ban oil imports from the former Soviet republics over their invasion of Ukraine.

The legislation passed unanimously in both congressional chambers.

President Biden is expected to sign the measure into law.

U.S. PNTR, which confers trade advantages such as low tariffs, is granted to all countries except for ones specifically denied the status. Without PNTR, the Biden administration can place higher tariffs on imports from Russia and Belarus.
