Franklin Ray Hieb, 99, passed away on April 6, 2022, at Ave Maria Village in Jamestown ND. Frank was a resident in the short-term rehab center.
Frank was born November 21, 1922, on a farmstead 13 miles southwest of Woodworth to Jacob Ray Hieb and Rose (Deede) Hieb. He grew up working on the family farm. Frank attended a 1-room school and walked to school sometimes carrying a stick to scare off the coyotes. While attending high school in Jamestown, he had several jobs including setting pins by hand in the bowling alley and washing dishes. Frank taught rural school for 2 years after attending college in Valley City and then went back home to help his father with the family farm.
On April 2, 1954, Frank married Joann Hornung. In their 68 years of marriage, they raised 5 children, Kathy, Sue, Sheila, Shirley and Scott. Frank enjoyed outdoor work and farmed for many years, raising crops, making hay and milking cows. Frank and Joann also raised geese, ducks, chickens, turkeys and sheep and always had a team of draft horses as well as Shetland ponies for the kids to ride, and dogs, cats and rabbits. After farming, Frank worked at the station in Cleveland and became the manager. Frank also was a mechanic at the Cenex station in Jamestown as well as helped a local farmer with mowing and harvesting for many years.
Frank was a family man and enjoyed his children and grandchildren. He loved playing cards, board games and crossword puzzles. He played the harmonica and the accordion and sang. Frank loved to visit and could strike up a conversation with anyone. Frank was a member of the Methodist Church in Cleveland.
Frank is survived by his wife, Joann, five children, Kathy (Bruce), Concord, NC, Sue, Elbow Lake, MN, Sheila (Lynn), Omaha, NE, Shirley (Kelly), Thompson, ND, and Scott (Kerrie), Farwell, MN; 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Frank is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, James and George.
A private memorial service was held by the family. Burial is at Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown ND.
